Why small retail stores ask for ID with a credit card while big don’t

Do you need ID for credit card purchases?

In most instances, merchants are not allowed to require an ID for credit card purchases. They can ask for your ID, but they cannot refuse to accept your credit card if you don’t show your ID, as long as your credit card is signed.

Do you need ID for debit card?

Generally speaking, a debit card does not require the user to show identification to the merchant. Yet, some merchants may have a store policy requiring customers show identification, especially if the customer is not using his personal identification number (PIN) with the card.
