What does it mean to eat a cost?

“Eat the cost” is a common informal phrase. It’s not slang but it’s not high level formal either. It means instead of making money from the customer, when the mattress is returned they will give the money back and pay for the mattress themselves out of their own money (because they can’t sell it to someone else).
