Received an unexpected cashiers check for over $2K from another state – is this some scam?

Yes, it is most likely a scam. “Drawer: Moneygram” is one of the giveaways, IMHO. Because MoneyGram doesn’t issue cashier’s checks, only official checks, which they issue themselves.

How do you verify that a cashier’s check is real?

The payee’s name should already be printed on a cashier’s check (this is done at the bank by a teller). If the payee line is blank, the check is fake. A genuine cashier’s check always includes a phone number for the issuing bank. That number is often missing on a fake check or is fake itself.

Can a certified cashier’s check be fake?

Unlike a personal check, a cashier’s check is a direct obligation of the bank. As a result, there is virtually no risk that a cashier’s check will bounce or otherwise be invalid. Unfortunately, fraudsters can create phony cashier’s checks and use them for check scams.

Are cashier’s checks suspicious?

A cashier’s check is less risky than other types of checks only if the item is genuine. If you can, ask for a cashier’s check drawn on a bank with a branch in your area. If you want to find out whether a check is genuine, call or visit the bank on which the check is written.

How do I report a fake cashiers check?

The Federal Trade Commission at FTC Complaint Assistant (www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov). The U.S. Postal Inspection Service at www.uspis.gov (if you received the check in the mail). Your state or local consumer protection agencies.

How can you tell its a fake check?

Edges: Most legit checks have at least one perforated or rough edge. If all edges are smooth, the check may have been printed from a personal computer. 2. Bank logo: A fake check often has no bank logo or one that’s faded, suggesting it was copied from an online photo or software.

What happens if you unknowingly deposit a fake check?

The consequences of depositing a fake check — even unknowingly — can be costly. You may be responsible for repaying the entire amount of the check. While bank policies and state laws vary, you may have to pay the bank the entire amount of the fraudulent check that you cashed or deposited into your account.

Can you get scammed with a certified check?

Although a certified check can help protect against fraud and bounced checks, if you’re accepting the payment, know that scammers can create fake certified checks that look authentic.
