How do you measure staples for a staple gun?

Most staples have two reference numbers that are normally standard throughout the brands. The first digits, i.e. 24/## or 26/## indicate the gauge of the wire, the thickness. The second number reflects the length of the staple leg, or shank, and is measured in millimetres. However, this isn’t always the case.
